What would you do if you had to divide all your possessions between your children, but punished the one who refused to flatter you? That is where Shakespeare’s King Lear begins. Centuries after it was first written, the tragedy of an aging king and his three daughters continues to find new audiences, including in Cairo, where Egyptian actor Yehia El-Fakharany, as king Lear, has made the role his own across the past two decades. Now, as his latest King Lear continues its run at the National Theatre, the production offers Cairo audiences a chance to experience one of Shakespeare’s most famous tragedies live on stage. In August 2026, the play celebrated its 200th performance, with reported box-office revenues exceeding EGP 6 million (USD 118,000) which is a strong indication of the audience interest surrounding the production. The post, published by a woman accusing Nabil Emad,, a football player for Zamalek SC, one of Egypt’s most prominent football clubs, quickly spread online as users debated the allegations of rape and shared opinions.  Yet, beyond the claims themselves, the situation raised a broader question: why are more people choosing to take their stories to social media, even when legal action is already underway? The allegations stem from a post published in June, 2026, on Instagram by a woman who identifies herself as a dual citizen of Italy and Brazil under the handle @xo_maiu. In the post, she accused Emad, nicknamed Donga, of sexually assaulting her during a visit to Egypt in 2025.  According to her account, she reported the incident to Egyptian authorities, testified before prosecutors, and submitted evidence as part of an ongoing investigation.
