Over the weekend in downtown Cairo, an exhibition turned donated clothing that might once have ended up in a landfill into a curated material system, sorted by color, texture, and pattern, inviting visitors to see textile waste as a resource. The Egyptian Clothing Bank (ECB), a nonprofit organization, held the fourth edition of its From Waste to Good Taste (FWGT) exhibition on 25 and 26 September at The Factory, a venue on Al Nabrawi Street in Qasr El Nile, Downtown. The two-day exhibition traced each piece’s journey through the bank’s circular system, from repair to redistribution, and paired that display with art installations and hands-on workshops. Proceeds and fundraising activities will support the bank’s Back-to-School campaign, which provides school uniforms and bags to children in need. Before presenting donations, organizers grouped discarded garments and fabrics by visual qualities, turning what is usually hidden in sorting facilities into something visitors could walk through and study.
