In 2009, Jameel House of Traditional Arts opened its doors in Cairo. A two-year programme delivered by The King’s Foundation, School of Traditional Arts in London, it teaches “sacred geometry, observational drawing, colour harmony and decorative floral patterns,” alongside specialised training in ceramics, glass, gypsum, metalwork and woodwork: disciplines that, in most of the world, are treated as separate crafts with separate lifetimes of study behind them, and are in need of preserving. In 2025, it opened its doors to me. In the final interview of my application process, the admissions panel looked at my contemporary, abstract, perhaps obviously self-taught ceramics and showed me their students’ traditional projects. “This is what we teach here,” said one of the panellists. Egypt’s Ministry of Transport is preparing to begin a trial run (without passengers) for a section of Line 1 of the “Sokhna–Alamein–Matrouh” high-speed electric train network. According to the ministry, substantial progress has already been made across multiple route sections handed over to the international consortium comprising Siemens, Orascom, and Arab Contractors, while field work continues at full pace to ensure the system’s readiness. Line 1 of Egypt’s high-speed rail network will cost about USD 4.45 billion (EGP231 billion) Construction began in 2021, with trial runs now underway and opening targeted for late 2026. Work on the network includes the installation of sleepers, laying of ballast and rails, erecting catenary masts, and the implementation of electromechanical systems. Officials said these measures are being taken to test operational efficiency against the highest global safety standards before a gradual rollout across all route segments.
