Young Egyptian player, Hamza Abdelkarim, made his competitive debut for FC Barcelona during the club’s 5–2 La Liga victory over Rayo Vallecano on Monday, 31 August, becoming the first Egyptian player to represent Barcelona’s first team in a competitive fixture. Abdelkarim entered the match in the closing stages, replacing Raphinha. Although his time on the pitch was brief, the appearance carried enormous significance. He became the first Egyptian player in Barcelona’s history to appear in a competitive match for the first team. He is also only the third Egyptian to play in La Liga, following Mido and Haissem Hassan. The 18-year-old had impressed throughout Barcelona’s preseason, finishing as the team’s leading scorer with four goals. Egypt is planning a major expansion of Cairo International Airport with a new Terminal 4 designed to handle up to 40 million passengers a year, according to a statement on Monday, 31 August. President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi reviewed plans for the new terminal during a meeting on Monday with Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly, Civil Aviation Minister Sameh El-Hefny and Presidential Advisor for Financial Affairs Ahmed El-Shazly. The new terminal is expected to use the latest airport technology, including artificial intelligence, digital systems and smart operations. These technologies will be used to improve everything from airport efficiency to the passenger experience. El-Sisi has instructed officials to ensure the terminal meets the highest international standards for design, technology, sustainability, safety and security. Cairo International Airport already handles more than 30 million passengers a year, but that number is expected to rise to around 70 million annually. The new terminal will help the airport prepare for that growth by allowing it to handle more passengers and flights.
