Mohammad Fawaz Al-Wahidi (“Abu Sahib”), Director of the Office of Elders and Community Leaders at the Egyptian Relief Committee headquartered in Gaza City, was killed on Tuesday, 7 July, by an Israeli airstrike that targeted a vehicle in Gaza City’s Sabra neighborhood. Local accounts said the strike killed Al-Wahidi along with two other people, one of them a child, after the vehicle they were traveling in was hit. The attack came about an hour before the kickoff of Egypt’s World Cup 2026 match against Argentina in the round of 16, a timing that intensified public attention as the strike’s news spread amid broader efforts underway in the Strip. At the time of the incident, the Egyptian Relief Committee in Gaza was organizing public activities in shelters and displacement areas across the territory so that displaced families could watch the match in a more uplifting environment. Al-Wahidi was described as one of the prominent figures connected to the committee’s work, previously overseeing public relations and media coordination for the committee’s activities, including reconstruction projects and humanitarian and service support to residents. The committee has continued, since the start of theContinue reading "Palestinian Relief Official Killed in Israeli Strike on Gaza Vehicle"

Egypt’s 2026 World Cup campaign ended in disappointment on Tuesday, 7 July, as reigning champions Argentina overturned a two-goal deficit to win 3-2 in the Round of 16. The result was immediately overshadowed by a fierce controversy over the match’s officiating. The Egyptian national team had appeared on the verge of one of the tournament’s great upsets, with goals from Yasser Ibrahim and Mostafa Zico that put the team’s head coach, Hossam Hassan’s side firmly in control, before Cristian Romero, Lionel Messi, and Enzo Fernandez combined to stage a stunning late comeback for the holders. French referee François Letexier, not Argentina’s recovery, dominated the post-match conversation, as a goal from Zico was ruled out after a lengthy Video Assistant Referee (VAR) review for a foul while two separate incidents involving Egyptian players inside Argentina’s penalty area went without review. The decisions drew immediate condemnation from Egyptian players and officials. “Not fair, not fair. The referee was the reason for the defeat,” said Zico after the final whistle. Coach Hassan was similarly unsparing. He told reporters, “We were the better team and imposed our strategy on our opponents. I don’t knowContinue reading "Egypt’s Football Association Slams Referee After World Cup Exit to Argentina"
