There are no signs for it, no manual, no test to pass, but every driver in Cairo knows the rules of the road that matter most are the ones nobody wrote down. A honk means “move, I am coming through”. A raised hand means “sorry”. An arm out the window means “I’m turning, whether the blinkers are on or not”. A microbus barreling toward you means, more often than not, “get out of the way.” “Driving in Cairo requires arrogance, entitlement and a bit of lawlessness,” explained Mohamed Mahmoud, a 34-year-old operations manager. Adapting is mandatory Traffic laws only work if enough people follow them, and in Cairo, the majority do not. Mahmoud noted that following the rules among so many others who do not “will slow you down.” “To get to your destination, you need to adapt,” he shared. The pressure to keep moving is even measurable. In 2025, Cairo recorded an average congestion level of 40.5 percent, with drivers losing about 74 hours to rush-hour traffic over the year, according to the multinational company TomTom’s Traffic Index, which offers real-time traffic data. Nehal Raafat, 29, a marketer, toldContinue reading "Driving in Cairo Runs on Power, Fear and Flashing Lights"

Banque du Caire announced its plans on 11 October to sell 30 percent of its capital to the public, a long-anticipated move on the Egyptian Exchange that has been repeatedly postponed for years, according to an official statement from the bank. Banque Misr, the state-owned lender that holds the shares, will sell about 4.7 billion of them. The offering will be split into two tranches for qualified institutional investors and another for retail investors in Egypt. The subscription is expected to take place in late October or early November, pending approval from regulators, including the Financial Regulatory Authority. CI Capital, an Egyptian investment bank, will manage and coordinate the offering. EFG Hermes was selected to handle marketing and underwriting and will serve as lead manager and global coordinator. Baker McKenzie was appointed legal adviser to both banks on U.S. and English law, while Helmy, Hamza & Partners will advise on Egyptian law. The announcement ends a delay of roughly 19 years, which stemmed from disputes over valuation and, at times, the government’s reluctance to sell. In June 2025, the government tried to sell the bank to a strategic investor, butContinue reading "Banque du Caire to Offer 30% Stake to Public in Long-Awaited Listing"
