Over the weekend in downtown Cairo, an exhibition turned donated clothing that might once have ended up in a landfill into a curated material system, sorted by color, texture, and pattern, inviting visitors to see textile waste as a resource. The Egyptian Clothing Bank (ECB), a nonprofit organization, held the fourth edition of its From Waste to Good Taste (FWGT) exhibition on 25 and 26 September at The Factory, a venue on Al Nabrawi Street in Qasr El Nile, Downtown. The two-day exhibition traced each piece’s journey through the bank’s circular system, from repair to redistribution, and paired that display with art installations and hands-on workshops. Proceeds and fundraising activities will support the bank’s Back-to-School campaign, which provides school uniforms and bags to children in need. Before presenting donations, organizers grouped discarded garments and fabrics by visual qualities, turning what is usually hidden in sorting facilities into something visitors could walk through and study. The display walked visitors through each stage of the bank’s process, from collection and sorting to fixing, reuse, redesign, upcycling, recycling, and reallocation. “Circularity starts when we stop seeing the end of use as the endContinue reading "Discarded Clothing Finds New Life in This Cairo Exhibition"

Protecting cultural heritage is no longer a local matter or the responsibility of any single state, but a shared human responsibility that requires international cooperation between cultural, academic, and technology institutions, Ashraf El-Ezaby, secretary-general of Egypt’s Supreme Council of Culture, stated. On 9 September, he spoke before an audience of more than 300 experts and institutional representatives from over 30 countries at the International Symposium on Cultural Heritage Conservation by Digitization (CHCD) at Tsinghua University in Beijing. El-Ezaby stated that Egypt, through its Ministry of Culture and the Supreme Council of Culture, is prioritizing digitizing its heritage. Egypt’s push to use technology to protect its heritage has been in the works since the early 2000s. As of 18 July of this year, Egypt’s Supreme Council of Antiquities is building what officials describe as an integrated, Artificial Intelligence (AI) supported system to help recover looted Egyptian artifacts and preserve the country’s heritage for future generations. Using AI, the system supports ongoing monitoring of Egypt’s roughly 1,100 known archaeological areas, of which researchers estimate more than a quarter have already sustained major looting-related damage. Many of those sites sit far from museumContinue reading "How Digital Tools Are Transforming Egypt’s Heritage Preservation"
