Egypt’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has pushed back against reports circulating on social media that large numbers of Egyptian workers are being dismissed from their jobs in the United Arab Emirates, according to an official statement. The ministry says there is no evidence of a widespread campaign against Egyptian workers in the UAE or elsewhere in the Gulf, describing the cases being shared online as individual incidents rather than part of a broader trend. Haddad El-Gohary, assistant foreign minister for consular affairs, said that Egyptian officials had been monitoring the reports and checking individual cases with the relevant authorities. According to El-Gohary, the UAE is currently reviewing residency permits and entry visas, but this should not be confused with a mass dismissal of Egyptian workers. What is actually happening? Some Egyptians have had their residency permits cancelled, El-Gohary acknowledged. But he said most of the cases examined by Egyptian authorities involved violations of UAE residency rules. One of those rules requires residents who leave the UAE to return within six months. The requirement applies to residents of all nationalities, not just Egyptians. Other cases involve people who entered theContinue reading "Are Egyptian Workers Being Laid Off Across the UAE? Egypt Responds"

Egypt’s nuclear regulator has issued a statement on Tuesday, 18 August, explaining the safety standards of the El Dabaa Nuclear Power Plant, following recently published allegations by Politico about potential violations during the project’s construction. The Egyptian Nuclear and Radiological Regulatory Authority (ENRA) said the plant is being implemented in line with internationally recognised nuclear safety and security standards and remains under continuous national regulatory oversight. According to the authority, all stages of construction are also subject to monitoring and support from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). ENRA said its oversight of the project includes reviewing licensing documents, approving construction activities, conducting daily and periodic inspections, and following up on any observations identified during inspections. The authority added that the licensing process took around 18 months and involved international experts. Daily inspections are carried out through a resident inspector system involving ENRA specialists, alongside experts from an international consultant with experience in the technology used at the plant, according to the statement. ENRA said that any observations identified during inspections are followed up with Egypt’s Nuclear Power Plants Authority and the Russian contractor to ensure that corrective measures areContinue reading "Egypt’s Nuclear Regulator Responds to Safety Concerns Over El Dabaa Plant"
