Switzerland Repatriates 2,000-Year-Old Egyptian Funerary Mask
Source: https://egyptianstreets.com/feed/

Switzerland has returned to Egypt an ancient funerary mask dating to the Ptolemaic period, according to an announcement by the Embassy of Switzerland in Egypt on Facebook on 16 September, as part of an ongoing partnership between the two countries to safeguard cultural heritage and combat the illicit trafficking of antiquities. The mask, which Swiss customs authorities seized in 2022, is believed to be more than 2,000 years old. Experts examined and authenticated the piece, confirming it as an Egyptian artifact from the Ptolemaic era, a period that began after the conquests of Alexander the Great and ended with the reign of Cleopatra. The formal handover took place in Bern, the Swiss capital, where Swiss Federal Councillor Elisabeth Baume-Schneider presented the mask to Mohamed Nagm, Egypt’s ambassador to Switzerland. The artifact is now set to return to its country of origin more than two millennia after it was crafted. The restitution is the latest chapter in a long-running collaboration between Cairo and Bern aimed at protecting cultural property and curbing the illegal trade in antiquities. Switzerland has returned roughly 80 cultural and archaeological objects to Egypt since 2011. The returnContinue reading "Switzerland Repatriates 2,000-Year-Old Egyptian Funerary Mask"

Minya Man Arrested After Egyptian Authorities Seize 151 Antiquities Intended for Illegal Sale
Source: https://egyptianstreets.com/feed/

Egyptian security forces in Minya arrested a man found in possession of 151 ancient artefacts intended for illegal trade, the Interior Ministry said on Tuesday, 15 September. The seized items included two ancient coffins, 37 statues made of limestone, and bronze, a statue base, an amulet, three vessels, a pottery flask, and 97 metal coins. During questioning, the suspect admitted that the artefacts had been obtained through illegal excavation at a mountainous site in Abu Qurqas, Minya. He also confirmed that he was holding the items with the intention of trading them unlawfully. The Interior Ministry said the operation was carried out as part of ongoing efforts by Egypt’s security authorities to combat crimes involving the possession and illegal trade of archaeological artefacts, and to protect Egypt’s national treasures and heritage. Authorities stated that the seized antiquities were presented to the relevant bodies, which confirmed that they were genuine and dated to the Pharaonic, Greek and Roman eras. Legal measures are said to be taken against the suspect following the identification of the items and the findings reported during the investigation.
