A week ago, the graduation ceremony of Jomana Kamal, a biotechnology graduate of Badr University in Cairo, became the centre of a national argument about women’s clothing, authority, and public morality. According to Kamal’s account, she went to the university’s Faculty of Veterinary Medicine to collect her graduation cap and gown. She says that the dean, Adel Abdel-Khalek, objected to what she was wearing and questioned her about her dress. She has said that the dress came below the knee and that there was no specific dress code for the graduation ceremony that she was violating. She also alleged that the dean photographed her on his phone and that security subsequently intervened. Her lawyer, Amgad Mourad, has described the incident as psychologically distressing and says the family filed a police report. He has also said that witnesses, documents and other evidence were being prepared for prosecutors. The university opened an internal investigation, and the legal process is still continuing. After the incident, Badr University’s president, Ashraf El-Sheehy, personally presented Kamal with her graduation certificate and formally honoured her on Sunday, 6 September. The session included Minal Awad, minister of local development and environment, Randa El-Menshawy, minister of housing, utilities and urban communities, and Cairo Governor Ibrahim Saber, according to a cabinet statement. Madbouly called for a task force drawing on relevant ministries, the governorate and outside consultants to guide the project’s rollout, and asked for a standardized approach to tree planting along the city’s major roads, to be shaped by expert recommendations on suitable species andContinue reading "Cairo to Begin Turning Vacant Land Into Green Spaces"
