The United Nations General Assembly voted on 4 September in favor of promoting a new world map designed to show the relative size of continents more accurately, in a move led by African countries and backed by the African Union. The resolution, introduced by Togo, passed with 164 countries voting in favor, one against and six abstaining. The United States was the only country to vote against it. At the center of the debate is the Mercator projection, a map created in the 16th century that remains widely used around the world. While the projection was designed for navigation, it significantly distorts the apparent size of land masses, particularly those farther from the Equator. One of the clearest examples is Greenland. On a Mercator map, Greenland can appear comparable in size to Africa. In reality, Africa is about 14 times larger than Greenland. The UN resolution promotes the Equal Earth projection, developed in 2018, which represents the relative areas of continents more accurately. Egypt and Italy discussed expanding cooperation in trade, investment, energy, and labour mobility during the first session of the Egyptian-Italian Joint Higher Committee in Cairo on Thursday, 3 September, according to a statement issued by Egypt’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs published on Friday, 4 September. The meeting was co-chaired by Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty and Italian Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani, with several ministers and senior officials from both countries taking part. Abdelatty highlighted the steady growth in trade between Egypt and Italy and expressed Egypt’s interest in attracting further Italian investment. He pointed to Egypt’s position as a logistics and trade hub and a gateway to African markets. Investment and Foreign Trade Minister Mohamed Farid called for the reactivation of the Egyptian-Italian Business Council and closer communication between businesses in both countries to turn trade and investment opportunities into concrete projects.
