On the surface, Syrian-born poet Nizar Qabbani was either seen as someone who objectified women or as someone who was overt about sensuality. He was often labeled with many different titles; some have described him as a progressive Arab poet, while others have criticized him for moral degeneracy. But beneath all of these labels, not many have looked at his poetry through the lens of Qabbani as a ‘philosopher of love.’ His poetry did not merely portray love and sensuality as emotions to be experienced, but as human experiences worthy of contemplation. In his work, love becomes a subject of reflection, questioning, and philosophical inquiry. During the 20th century, at a time when speaking openly about sexual desire was forbidden, censored, or considered socially taboo, Qabbani revived the ancient artistic tradition of using coded and symbolic language. It was a communication tool used by artists and poets to express what could not be spoken openly, while also protecting them from the consequences of addressing taboo subjects directly. On Sunday, 30 August, Sharif Fathi, Minister of Tourism and Antiquities, inspected the Giza Pyramids area to track progress and review work stages for the fixed balloon project currently underway there. The project is being carried out by ‘Tashreef for Tourism Marketing’ in cooperation with the French company ‘Aerophile’. The Minister stated that the project will be the first of its kind in the surrounding area, and that it will serve as one of the new recreational activities to be offered to visitors and tourists. During the tour, the Minister was accompanied by Ashraf Muhyi El-Din, General Director of Antiquities in Giza; Mohamed Kamel, and Chairman of the Board and Managing Director of Tashreef for Tourism Marketing. Fathi added that the balloon experience will offer visitors a new perspective of the Pyramids of Giza area, its landmarks, and its surrounding landscape. He also confirmed that the project was placed two kilometers from the Pyramids and 2.2 kilometers from the Sphinx. Additionally, the balloon will be anchored to the ground and will move vertically as it ascends and descends.
