A fire broke out on Sunday, 30 August, at August Mall in the Fifth Settlement district of New Cairo, where many shops, offices and restaurants are, sending emergency crews racing to the scene and briefly disrupting one of the Egyptian capital’s busiest commercial corridors. One person was injured in the fire, according to authorities, though there were no reports of any deaths. Civil defense teams dispatched a number of fire trucks to the site soon after the fire was reported. Officials said the crews were able to bring the flames under control and prevent them from spreading to the rest of the mall or to neighboring shops and businesses. Mohamed Youssef, the assistant interior minister for Cairo security, traveled to the scene along with other senior security officials and police officers to oversee the response, secure the area, and examine the circumstances surrounding the fire. Authorities said the necessary measures had been taken to secure the site, and that relevant agencies were intensifying efforts to determine the cause of the fire and assess the extent of the damage. The cause of the blaze and further details had not been announced.

The ministry described representing Egypt abroad as a responsibility as much as an honor, and noted that anyone holding an administrative role within a sports delegation bears that duty in full, from the start of competition until the last member of the delegation returns home.
