Less Testing Was a Choice. So Is the Future
Source: https://dailynewsegypt.com/feed/

The risk of nuclear war does not rest on a single decision. It accumulates, test by test, each explosion edging the world closer to potential catastrophe. That escalation carries a cost of its own, too: every nuclear weapon test leaves a scar on land and on water, and some who lived near test sites have […]

Egypt Calls for Global Agreement to Tackle Growing Drought Threat
Source: https://egyptianstreets.com/feed/

Egypt has called for the adoption of a legally binding international protocol on drought, warning that drought, desertification and land degradation are increasingly threatening water and food security, livelihoods and socioeconomic stability. Water Resources and Irrigation Minister Hani Sewilam made the call during the ministerial segment of the 17th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD COP17), held in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia. Sewilam said drought represents a particularly serious challenge for countries facing acute water scarcity, including Egypt, where available water resources fall below the absolute water scarcity threshold and more than 95 percent of the country is desert. He called for a shift away from responding to drought crises only after they occur and towards greater prevention and preparedness, including stronger early-warning systems and more integrated management of water and land resources. Egypt is seeking tangible progress towards a legally binding drought protocol that would provide a clearer framework for international cooperation and help vulnerable countries strengthen their ability to prepare for and respond to drought, according to Daily News Egypt’s report on Sewilam’s remarks. The minister also called for increased financing, stronger institutionalContinue reading "Egypt Calls for Global Agreement to Tackle Growing Drought Threat"

Egypt’s Women Win Table Tennis Gold at Mediterranean Games
Source: https://egyptianstreets.com/feed/

Egypt’s women’s table tennis team won gold at the Mediterranean Games in Taranto, Italy, on Wednesday, 29 August, defeating the host nation, Italy, 3-0 in the final after eliminating Serbia by the same score in the semifinals, according to Sherif El-Qammati, head of the Egyptian delegation.   Speaking on the Egyptian television program “This Morning,” aired on Extra News, El-Qammati said the team’s performance had been outstanding and helped push Egypt’s overall gold medal count to 10 so far, with several silver medals also secured. He added he expected the delegation to add to that total as competition continues. He further noted that Egypt is locked in a tight battle for fourth place in the medal standings against France and Spain, even though both countries have fielded larger delegations. Egyptian officials had selected athletes based on criteria meant to ensure each competitor was capable of reaching the podium, rather than simply maximizing the size of the team, he shared. Egypt has competed at the Mediterranean Games since their inception in 1951, when Alexandria hosted the inaugural edition, and has taken part in nearly every edition since. Over that history, EgyptianContinue reading "Egypt’s Women Win Table Tennis Gold at Mediterranean Games"
