The Civil Court of Genoa in Italy has ordered on 14 October the maritime certification company RINA SpA to pay more than EUR 60 million (EGP 3 billion) in compensation to relatives and survivors of about 700 victims of the Egyptian ferry Al Salam Boccaccio 98, which sank in the Red Sea in 2006. The first-instance ruling, signed by Judge Daniele Bianchi, identifies the negligent conduct of the classification society as the main cause of a disaster that claimed 1,071 lives. The Boccaccio was one of five sister ships of the “Poeti” series, built for the Italian company Tirrenia in 1968. In 1990, Tirrenia increased the vessel’s capacity to compete with private operators by adding four decks, and in 1999 the five ships were sold to the Egyptian owner El Salam Shipping & Trading. In 2002, the sister ship Petrarca sank in the Red Sea after a fire, with one death. The Boccaccio’s turn came on the night of 2 to 3 February 2006, while it was travelling from Saudi Arabia toward the Egyptian port of Safaga. Of roughly 1,400 people on board, most of which were Egyptian migrantContinue reading "Italy Holds RINA Liable for EUR 60 Million Over Egypt Ferry Disaster"

Moody’s Ratings, one of the world’s major credit-rating agencies, has upgraded Egypt’s long-term credit rating to B3 from its previous level, maintaining a positive outlook as the country makes progress on economic reforms, strengthens its foreign currency reserves, and works to reduce government debt. The Egyptian Cabinet announced the upgrade on Saturday, 17 October, saying the decision reflects improvements in the country’s economic performance and its ability to meet its financial obligations. Moody’s also upgraded its ratings for Egypt’s foreign-currency unsecured debt. What led to the upgrade? According to Moody’s, Egypt’s progress in controlling government spending, increasing tax revenues, and introducing economic reforms has helped improve public finances. The shift toward a more flexible exchange rate and tighter monetary policies has also helped strengthen foreign reserves and make the economy more resilient to external economic shocks. Moody’s added that continued financial discipline and further reforms could help Egypt reduce its government debt and interest payments faster than expected. This is one of the main reasons the agency maintained a positive outlook. The Ministry of Finance highlighted several economic indicators that supported the upgrade, as government debt fell to 81.9Continue reading "Egypt Moves Closer to Economic Stability as Moody’s Upgrades Credit Rating"
