On the Mediterranean shore, where the sea wind carries salt, the memory of a library said to have held the ancient world’s knowledge stands. The Bibliotheca Alexandrina, opened in 2002 as a modern heir to that lost institution, wears its ambition on its outer wall, which is carved with letters from scripts around the world. From 21 to 23 September, Egypt held a conference on national identity, under the patronage of President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi. At the end of the conference, the Bibliotheca Alexandrina issued a national reference document, titled “Alexandria Document on National Identity,” that describes Egyptian identity as an inheritance thousands of years old, carried by its people, its language and its culture, and renewed by each generation. The Alexandria Document on National Identity is a roadmap and strategic initiative that comes as Egypt, like many countries, faces pressure on its sense of self from globalization, digital media, and turmoil across the region. The document portrays what it means to be Egyptian and identifies the forces that threaten that identity. It calls on families, schools, media, and religious institutions to preserve it and carry it forward to futureContinue reading "Bibliotheca Alexandrina Maps the Foundations of Egyptian Identity"

President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi called for an emergency parliamentary session to authorise Egypt to defend Saudi Arabia if requested, during the Egyptian Military Academy’s graduation ceremony on Saturday, 17 October. El-Sisi said Egypt was prepared to take measures to protect Saudi Arabia’s security and sovereignty, stressing that any such action would depend on a request from Riyadh and require parliamentary approval. “We will take any action to protect Saudi Arabia, and I call on parliament to hold an emergency session to authorise this action if we are asked to do so,” El-Sisi added. He emphasised that Egypt’s position was defensive, rather than an intention to initiate military action. “We do not want to fight or attack anyone. We will only defend Saudi Arabia,” he added. The president also reaffirmed Egypt’s support for other Gulf countries, stressing that Cairo would stand alongside them in the event of threats to their security or territorial integrity. The remarks follow statements made by El-Sisi on Thursday, 15 October, when he said that threats to Saudi Arabia would also affect Egyptian and Arab national security. Saturday’s comments went further by outlining the possibility of seekingContinue reading "El-Sisi Seeks Parliamentary Approval for Possible Saudi Defence"
